Meet TEI Alumni… Jessica Hempsey

Hey, I'm Jes! Proud owner of Nature’s Clarity Skincare in Lethbridge Alberta. Nature’s Clarity is a Holistic Wellness Spa with a result driven twist.
We offer our guests a unique experience where we focus not only on their skin, but full body alignment from head to toe by incorporating breathwork, aromatherapy and meditation into our work. People really look forward to the way that they feel after they see us and that really flows through every treatment we do whether that be pedicures/manicures, lash lifts + tints, reflexology or massage.
I am a true believer that your G.L.O.W starts from feeling aligned from the inside - out. Our goal is for our guests to truly feel that inner beauty and peace radiating through every aspect of their day after their experience with us. We would love for you to be a part of our Self Love Community -  feel free to follow us on Instagram @naturesclarityskin or check out our website www.naturesclarityskin.com

Why did you choose to get into the esthetic industry? Was it a big change from your previous industry?

Truthfully, I have wanted to be in the beauty industry and to own my own spa ever since I was little. I vividly remember dreaming with my best friend on the playground in elementary school about owning our own spa together in California one day. We didn't totally make it to Cali but I am blessed to say that she does work along with me at Nature’s Clarity so our dreams did come true a bit.

There really is just something so special about being a part of this industry and it begins with the connection you have with your guests. I have a deep love and passion for wanting to support and be there for others and this Industry really allows you to work from your heart. Through connection also comes the ability to support people with feeling good about themselves. I myself have struggled with my own self image and loving myself over these years and let me tell you, your heart completely bursts with happiness when you’ve helped someone find their own inner confidence again.

How long has your business been open or how long have you been employed?

I started Nature’s Clarity Skincare as a home based business in August 2018. I feel so blessed to say that I grew quite quickly and was fully booked 3 months in advance early on in my career.

I had a few mini moves over the last few years that led me out of my home and into one of the oldest historic buildings in downtown Lethbridge where I went from renting one room - to two very quickly and having 4 people within N.C. In Feb 2020, I took a big leap and signed papers for our own brick and mortar and in June we moved into a gorgeous historic building that we now call home.

What was your biggest challenge; is it still an ongoing challenge?

I think my biggest challenge is holding space for my accomplishments and really feeling proud of myself. As an entrepreneur it’s easy for me to want things completed yesterday which makes it difficult to really hold space and pause during those times that deserve to be celebrated. The beautiful thing is I am aware, however I hope one day this isn't such a struggle for me.

What is a mistake that turned into a lesson?

This is a tough one especially because of who I am and where my heart is, however I think it has been the hard realization through growth that you simply cannot trust everyone and not everyone has your best interest at heart regardless of how deeply you do for them. It is completely okay to do what is best for you and your business.

How much time do you spend working on your business each day/week? How do you prioritize work-life balance if you are self-employed?

Oh goodness - TOO MUCH -  but I will say that I truly do love what I do - so often it does not feel like work.

However for the first four years there was zero prioritization of work or life balance which may have been the reason why I did grow so quickly yet it led me to feeling extremely unhappy and burnt out no matter what I was accomplishing. It really has only been within the last 6 months that I've really realized and prioritized the importance of slowing down and having those work boundaries. I also think it's really important to have grace for yourself through the process of being a CEO and to understand that not every day is going to look the same. You are going to have incredible days when things are flowing effortlessly and you're going to have days where it's hard to get words on paper. Just hold space for yourself and remember that you are human - not a robot.

What is one piece of advice you wish to share with someone who is interested in starting a career in esthetics or even a fellow beauty industry individual?

If you're thinking about being in this industry and you love to love on people then this is the place for you beautiful!! And I know it sounds silly and possibly something you have already heard but I cannot stress the importance of truly taking care of you and understanding that taking a break is in fact just as productive as putting in a long day. Choosing “you” is powerful and finding a happy personal/work balance will keep you connected to your career and feeling excited to go to work everyday. Don't fall out of love for what you do because you're pouring from an empty cup.

How did your training at TEI impact, influence or inspire you to succeed in business? Are you glad that you made the choice to do your training at TEI? Are there any special memories, moments or people of influence who made a difference in your education at TEI.

Meet TEI Alumni… Kristel Tucker

Hi beauties!! I’m Kristel hailing from the tranquil shores of The Bahamas. Currently I am a certified massage therapist, CIDESCO certified beauty therapist and Spa Manager, overseeing a quaint Day Spa at a boutique hotel in Exuma Bahamas. I also travel to nearby cays and perform services as a self-employed therapist.  I offer services ranging from beach massages to facials and waxing.

Why did you choose to get into the esthetic industry? Was it a big change from your previous industry?

Most of my working life I’ve been in customer care and service. I fell in love with the therapy of massage and upon completing my diploma course in Nassau, I desired to become a dual therapist and master all aspects of my field while being able to travel the world. That desire led me to The Esthetic Training Institute.

Honestly, I didn’t know in depth about the esthetics industry, but throughout training I grew an appreciation and love for the field. This industry is ever changing and growing plus I love the results and knowledge one can gain.

How long has your business been open or how long have you been employed?

I’ve been in the field for the past 4 years and at my current job for the past year. I’m so blessed that I get to expand my skill set and grow as a manager while enjoying beautiful weather and nature.

What was your biggest challenge; is it still an ongoing challenge?

I think my biggest challenge is balancing work and life. I have to be intentional and dedicate specific time to rest and rejuvenate because if I am not at my best I wont be able to offer the best to my clients.

How much time do you spend working on your business each day/week? How do you prioritize work-life balance if you are self-employed?

It can be intense balancing a full-time job and running a small business. However, I try to dedicate Sundays to rest and relaxing my body and mind.

What is one piece of advice you wish to share with someone who is interested in starting in a career in esthetics or even a fellow beauty industry individual?

If you can dream it, you can do it. I would encourage anyone to just go for it. And that pertains to all aspects of life.

How did your training at TEI impact, influence or inspire you to succeed in business? Are you glad that you made the choice to do your training at TEI? Are there any special memories, moments or people of influence who made a difference in your education at TEI.

I have been so blessed to connect with the awesome team at TEI. Vanessa is truly a gem and I am grateful for our connection. Apart from her, the entire team is amazing and made each step of my journey so much easier. To see the positive way in which TEI operates, with the center being educating and empowering all those that attend is beautiful and inspired me to want someday to operate my business the same. The connection is genuine from the minute you contact them up to the time you complete your course. Thank you, Meredith, Angela and your entire CIDESCO Diploma assistants team you guys rock!! Cheryl you are the absolute!! Thanks to the TEI team, I am forever grateful.

Keep an eye out for our next TEI Alumni, it could be you!

Meet TEI Alumni… Aneska Badenhorst

Aneska Badenhorst CIDESCO Beauty Therapy Diploma, Advanced Clinical Esthetican at Papillon Medical Dermatology & Laser Centre.
@sskinbyaneska @papillonmedical
I offer Fraxel Morpheus 8, PRP, hydrafacials, laser hair removal, microneedling and so much more.

Why did you choose to get into the esthetic industry? Was it a big change from your previous industry?

I chose to get into the industry to help others accentuate the best parts of themselves. To provide a safe and welcoming space where we aren’t focused on looking like someone else or changing our appearance but by adding a little spark to what you already have and assisting you to feel like your very best self.

How long has your business been open or how long have you been employed?

I have been employed for a year and a half now.

What was your biggest challenge; is it still an ongoing challenge?

My biggest challenge is bridging the gap between expectations from technician to client. I believe this will always be a challenge as we see ourselves very differently and have certain expectations based on previous experiences. But I do believe with good communication this can be mitigated to some degree.

What is one piece of advice you wish to share with someone who is interested in starting a career in esthetics or even a fellow beauty industry individual?

Find your uniqueness in this industry and make it your greatest passion. Originality and genuine compassion goes so far in this. It will make you stand out and love what you do every second of the day.

How did your training at TEI impact, influence or inspire you to succeed in business? Are you glad that you made the choice to do your training at TEI? Are there any special memories, moments or people of influence who made a difference in your education at TEI.

Receiving my education at TEI truly changed my success in this industry. The abundance of knowledge from my educators and TA’s opened new doors and opportunities I couldn’t even have dreamed of. TEI has made it possible to work anywhere in the world and hold a prestigious CIDESCO diploma. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the support of Vanessa & Silvia as well as the knowledge and guidance of Meredith, Angela, Jaden & Trelle. I am truly forever grateful for the opportunity to have studied at TEI.

Keep an eye out for our next TEI Alumni, it could be you!

Meet TEI Alumni… Cat Spitzer

I’m Cat, of Charlotte Crichton Esthetics. I offer a mix of clinical and non-clinical services, including laser hair removal, fractora (RF microneedling), IPL, facials and chemical peels.

Why did you choose to get into the esthetic industry? Was it a big change from your previous industry?

When I moved from Japan to Canada, I had initially planned on taking a job at the Calgary office of my previous job: a Strategy and Operations Consult in Pharmaceuticals. When I landed in Canada, I just couldn’t bring myself to go back to my old role - it just wasn’t bringing me happiness. As someone who has been obsessed with skin since as long as they can remember (I can thank a decade + of cystic acne for keeping me hooked on all things skin!). It was actually my husband who suggested I think about pursuing my passion!

How long has your business been open or how long have you been employed?

My business has been open now for 2 years - I actually can’t quite believe it! The last two years have been a constant learning curve, but I absolutely wouldn’t change it for anything.

What was your biggest challenge; is it still an ongoing challenge?

Goodness, there’s a few, but social media - although I love it - can be absolutely exhausting. For so many of us it’s our primary platform for marketing, and so it can be easy to get sidetracked by what others are doing. It can all feel quite competitive sometimes, which I don’t particularly enjoy. Knowing when to take breaks and not looking at your messages is key - I will let you know when I’ve mastered that haha.

Another challenge is managing client expectations around certain services. Truthfully I find IPL to be one of the hardest services to predict what someone’s outcome will be - and so managing expectations around that is key.

What is a mistake that turned into a lesson?

Following on from not managing client expectations, a mistake I made was letting a client see a picture of my IPL results, and not putting the caveat that their results might be different. I had great results on my first session - whereas their results have been much more subtle. I have definitely learned to take the time to manage expectations and have the conversation around results. Everyone’s skin is so different, and it’s not one size fits all - so having a client who wasn’t totally satisfied with her results (as a result of me not fully explaining she might not get the same results as me) was a real eye opener!

How much time do you spend working on your business each day/week? How do you prioritize work-life balance if you are self-employed?

It really depends on the week, the month, and how I’m feeling. I know some people are much more regimented with their business planning - but I very much go by feel. There will be weeks when I think about work 24/7 and I’m super productive, and pretty obsessed: yet there are weeks when I literally just see my clients, don’t post on social media and do the bare minimum. I’m not saying the boom or bust is the best way to manage a business by any means, but it’s just typically how I function as a person: all or nothing haha.

What is one piece of advice you wish to share with someone who is interested in starting a career in esthetics or even a fellow beauty industry individual?

If it’s your passion, and you enjoy connecting with people I couldn’t recommend it enough! It’s a really rewarding career and you can meet the absolutely most wonderful people. Like all things, it’s not all skittles and roses, and you’ve got to be prepared to do a heck load of laundry, but if it’s want you want to do - I’d say follow your heart.

How did your training at TEI impact, influence or inspire you to succeed in business? Are you glad that you made the choice to do your training at TEI? Are there any special memories, moments or people of influence who made a difference in your education at TEI.

I absolutely loved my time at TEI, and I continue to have a great relationship with the staff there. I have continually felt supported by them, and I really never hesitate to reach out when I’m stuck or need a second opinion on things. I’m really glad that I trained at TEI, and have loved continuing to feel supported by the team there. I couldn’t recommend TEI enough, and I felt ready to jump straight in following my training!

Keep an eye out for our next TEI Alumni, it could be you!

Meet TEI Alumni… Wendy Nguyen

Hello, I’m Wendy, and I specialize in facial services in combating signs of aging, acne breakouts, and discoloration concerns.  I believe that everyone deserves some self-care time, which is why my goal is to provide my clients with not only effective treatments, but also a break from their busy lives.  My current obsession in my line of work is focusing on advance laser treatments, such as RF microneedling.  To learn more about what I do in my field, you can find me on my Instagram as estie.wendy or visit Face Skin & Body Bar.

Why did you choose to get into the esthetic industry? Was it a big change from your previous industry?

Skincare has always been a passion of mine, and I have always been intrigued by the latest treatment and products out there.  It’s a big jump from my educational background in ecology, but I have been able to combine my love in science and esthetics in my line of work.  Making the transition into the esthetic industry has been a bit of a journey, but it is definitely something I love doing and don’t regret.

How long has your business been open or how long have you been employed?

I’ve been part of the Face skin & body bar for about 3 years, and I’ve had the pleasure of evolving with the company.  From starting as an esthetician to becoming a medical esthetician, and now as part of their management team.  I have also been fortunate to be part of the beauty industry as a brand ambassador at Shiseido Canada for over 5 years.

What was your biggest challenge; is it still an ongoing challenge?

My biggest challenge was building my social media platform, but I have learned to use a combination of different ways to share my passion in esthetics to others while building my name in this industry.

What is a mistake that turned into a lesson?

A mistake that turned into a lesson is definitely overbooking myself for work in the beginning of my career.  I have learned to juggle my work and personal time life a lot better since.

How much time do you spend working on your business each day/week? How do you prioritize work life balance if you are self employed?

I spend about 32-40 hours a week at my jobs.

What is one piece of advice you wish to share with someone who is interested in starting a career in esthetics or even a fellow beauty industry individual?

In this industry, there is always opportunity for growth and improvement.  Whether it’s improving a technique, learning from your colleagues, or continuing education, I believe self-investment is the key in becoming successful in this industry.

How did your training at TEI impact, influence or inspire you to succeed in business? Are you glad that you made the choice to do your training at TEI? Are there any special memories, moments or people of influence who made a difference in your education at TEI.

Going back to school and completing the CIDESCO and the clinical programs at TEI was one of the best decisions I’ve made for my career.  The training I received not only improved my technical skills, but it also boosted my confidence in my work as an esthetician.  I would like to thank Angela Rowland, Meredith Thompson, and Tamara Rosas, who were my mentors during my training at TEI, and has helped shaped me into the professional I am today.

Keep an eye out for our next TEI Alumni, it could be you!

Meet TEI Alumni… Emily Trewick

Hello my name is Emily Trewick and I am the owner and founder of the Sanctuary Spa based in the South West of Calgary in Pump Hill. The Sanctuary Spa provides Facial treatments, Spa massage, Waxing and Body Treatments in a luxurious and beautiful setting.

Why did you choose to get into the esthetic industry? Was it a big change from your previous industry?

After working many years in an executive business environment in the international corporate world running my own Rail Recruitment business, I decided when we moved as a family, from Dubai in the Middle East to Calgary in Canada, it was time for a major change in my career. Being in that fast paced world, as well as raising a family and balancing that with creating a home and supporting my husband, I never thought it would be possible to reinvent myself and do something that I really love and have an interest in.

But I took the plunge to learn, study and train about skin care, holistic therapies and body treatments, as these topics have been a major passion of mine all my life, with a vision of turning all this knowledge into something new. It was intimidating learning again in a classroom setting at The Esthetic Institute (TEI) however the Educators at TEI were outstanding and extremely patient with me. I have always loved being at the customer end of treatments and have sampled many spa experiences myself, some of these experiences have been exceptional and others not so much. Learning from these experiences and from what I have seen around the world in different spas, I wanted to create the location that I believe would give you the ultimate spa experience.

I created The Sanctuary Spa, I renovated our whole basement and invested in building a walk in/walk out access that separates the home to the Spa. The Sanctuary Spa is a place of peace, relaxation and rejuvenation. Its just for you the customer, with no distractions and completely focused on service for the customer from the moment they enter, until the time they leave.

How long has your business been open or how long have you been employed?

I achieved my certification in the Spring of 2020 and opened the Sanctuary Spa for business in the Summer of 2020.

What was your biggest challenge; is it still an ongoing challenge?

My biggest challenge once I decided to open the Sanctuary Spa was to obtain all the necessary qualifications. I am really thankful to The Esthetic Institute for supporting me through that learning and training to achieve my goal.

My biggest ongoing challenge is due to the success of The Sanctuary Spa, I am continually balancing my time between the business and family. But isn’t that the same for everyone in life.

What is a mistake that turned into a lesson?

Find your uniqueness in this industry and make it your greatest passion. Originality and genuine compassion goes so far in this. It will make you stand out and love what you do every second of the day.

How much time do you spend working on your business each day/week? How do you prioritize work life balance if you are self employed?

I am very good at maintaining a work life balance. I find that being flexible with regards to time with my clients is important to them and maintains a high level of client satisfaction and retains my clientele. I am fortunate to work to my own schedule and I make sure I have time in my working day to make family meals for the end of each day, especially for my husband or he is a grumpy git lol!

What is one piece of advice you wish to share with someone who is interested in starting a career in esthetics or even a fellow beauty industry individual?

My one piece of advice is to “make it happen” because it truly is a great industry. You can make a great living in this industry and a key point is that the work is really satisfying and good fun, with having many different clients, it means one day is never the same and changes all the time. Also the people in the industry itself are so great to work with, put it this way, you will never be bored. The relationships are amazing with clients and suppliers alike.

How did your training at TEI impact, influence or inspire you to succeed in business? Are you glad that you made the choice to do your training at TEI? Are there any special memories, moments or people of influence who made a difference in your education at TEI.

TEI gave me the tools and equipped me to establish The Sanctuary Spa. TEI has continued to support me and I love being a part of their community. Betty Ann is a fantastic Educator with knowledge in the industry that is “second to none”. Her work and passion ethic is remarkable and I think just training with Betty Ann was one of the highlights of my whole experience. The team at TEI is amazing and it really has a family feel, all they want is to see you do well and succeed, they will always go the extra mile to help you.

Keep an eye out for our next TEI Alumni, it could be you!

Why did you choose to get into the esthetic industry? Was it a big change from your previous industry?

After 21 years in management of operations, legal services and human resources, recruitment and talent management I felt I have done all I set out to do in the corporate world.  I knew I wanted to do something totally different which become glaring evident over Covid, I realized that, now was that time to actually take that leap of faith. I decided to research things I was passionate about and figure out how I can turn that into my career and what I do until I retire. As retirement isn’t that far away and as someone aging, I thought it would be amazing to study aesthetics and anti-aging research and the reality of what it is to anti-age. As as the technology and treatments evolve, I knew I wanted to be part of that world and learn as much as possible and use that knowledge to education others and myself. From there I become obsessed with skin conditions and inflammation which is a huge topic I hope to become more of an expert in. I still have much to learn and will do as much as time allows. My faith is what carries me through every challenge, and I believe that I am on the right path, and this is only the beginning of so many more amazing things to come. Contrary to the popular belief of manifestation, I choose to believe in my faith is the way forward if what has happened in a relatively short time has gone this way, I can't wait to see what happens next!

The big change and difference is that I am performing my own services, as I no longer have an assistant or multiple staff to manage. As of right now it is all me. So that in-itself is an eye opener but I have not one single regret but with the current momentum of my studio and my skin care line it is clear that I need to hire experts in areas that even though I have experience, I need to focus on building my brand and work with likeminded professionals who are smarter than me.  After running other businesses for other people for so many years, running my own corporation and side business, it is daunting some days and there is more to it that I ever realized.

How long has your business been open or how long have you been employed?

I opened a home studio first as a side gig to my latest legal job, as I booked more and more people it become a little too much for my family as a home business. So I decided that because of a successful launch of my home studio it was time to find a commercial space. I started with a small room in a beauty business in the SE. I was there for about 6 months, but it become clear I need to level up as I want my studio to be a serious skin therapy studio that does clinical facial treatments, laser hair removal, IPL, cavitation, RF skin tightening and not a regular spa with your average basic selection of facials. Also, I decided with the addition of my new skin care line that I need to incorporate.

On June 1st, I celebrated my official first anniversary of my business and dream. I wanted to continue with the demographic I had, and I met a doctor in a medical building who offered me a great deal on a suite that was bigger than my current space, so I moved to where I am now in the Health Plus Medical Clinic.  My space is a private and inclusive space, most of my clients will only allow photographs when they are masked, my clientele is preferring privacy, respecting this, they refer me to their friends and as a result I have built a solid client base and prefer referrals for new clients.  I may consider moving to larger space as my business grows and my skincare line grows, I will need a place for both services and retail and my own reception area. Goals for the future of Studio SoCal Aesthetics Inc. and Studio SoCal SkinCare.

What was your biggest challenge; is it still an ongoing challenge?

The biggest challenge I have is trying to do it all myself, I am a big picture thinker and visionary but sometimes I have to also be the reality check and details person and that is challenging for me at times. Finding a balance for staying healthy has been a struggle, like most women my age we find it easier to take care of others and put ourselves last. I am working to change that, fingers crossed!

What is a mistake that turned into a lesson?

I think like many of us starting something new we rush into wanting to buy everything at once, all the equipment you think you need and then realize there are so many options and waiting and really working in your space, listening to your clients will help you figure our what you really need. The resale of equipment is not a great ROI unfortunately. That is a lesson I hope others learn before they start buying equipment.

How much time do you spend working on your business each day/week? How do you prioritize work life balance if you are self employed?

I think as someone new to being an aspiring entrepreneur, I spend all my time working or thinking about work. My work-life balance is not what I would call balanced and that is by my choice, I hope to get better at finding balance, but I feel like my business will allow for that later, and for now it my passion and obsession so I am choosing this for now.

What is one piece of advice you wish to share with someone who is interested in starting a career in esthetics or even a fellow beauty industry individual?

The advice I would give is to do your research invest in the proper education. Fast and easy isn’t going to get anyone anywhere they want to be faster. A must is researching where you will find the necessary training and certifications is through an accredited school, read the reviews of the school, reach out to others who have graduated from the school you have an interest in.Find out what happened after graduation, were they prepared to work, what was their learning curve from school to employment. Those statistics are important and if you are serious do your research, nothing worse than paying the money or taking out a student loan and realizing you should have researched it more.

Also read the autobiography of Jane Wurwand, the founder of Dermalogica. Great book and lots of learning moments in this book based on her own personal successes and failures throughout her career. She is an amazing role model.

How did your training at TEI impact, influence or inspire you to succeed in business? Are you glad that you made the choice to do your training at TEI? Are there any special memories, moments or people of influence who made a difference in your education at TEI.

I feel so grateful for doing my research and finding TEI. It was nothing I expected and pleasantly surprised about the depth of training received, I have nothing but positive things to say. I truly believe that TEI a top training centre for aesthetics for all ages, whether starting a brand-new career or moving on to choose a new career. I recommend TEI whenever possible when asked how I got started. From the admissions, administrators, instructors and Vanessa, it’s all a class act and I was so inspired by all of the staff and instructors, I learned so much from all of them. I keep in touch with a few and hope to do some type of collaboration with TEI in the future.

The instructors were all amazing, but a few stand out who really affected me in a way that I will never forget and that I am fortunate to keep in contact with. So, a big hug and thanks to Nadia, Tamara, Betty-Ann and Jaden, you ladies were and continue to be a force in this industry and I am grateful to have learned different things from each of you that I carry with me always.

Keep an eye out for our next TEI Alumni, it could be you!

Meet TEI Alumni… Joanna Pham

My name is Tam Pham but I go by the name Joanna. I am a self-employed esthetician and entrepreneur. With over a year of being entrepreneur, I have successfully managed and grown my own business. My services include Advanced Facials, Relexology Facial Massage, Skincare Consultation, and Waxing. Feel free to check out my social media pages on Instagram and Facebook: @skin4lifebeautybar.
Webiste: skin4lifebeautybar.com

Why did you choose to get into the esthetic industry? Was it a big change from your previous industry?

Venturing into the beauty industry marked a significant turning point in my life.
After relocating to Canada in 2017, I secured a position in the Human Resources field. However, when the pandemic struck, I unfortunately faced a layoff. Rather than viewing it as a setback, I saw it as an opportunity for a fresh beginning in my professional journey. My deep-rooted concern for skin health, coupled with an unwavering passion for the cosmetic industry, skincare techniques, tips, and natural healthcare, compelled me to pursue my dream of becoming an esthetician. Moreover, during my teenage years, I endured the challenges of severe acne, which were exacerbated by a lack of skincare knowledge. Therefore, my primary focus is to assist individuals in achieving their desired skin goals, empowering them with a renewed sense of confidence and self-care.

How long has your business been open or how long have you been employed?

I worked for a spa before I decided to open my own business. My business was opened in April, 2022. I am glad that I decided to run my own and now my business is more than 1 year old.

What was your biggest challenge; is it still an ongoing challenge?

My studio operates as a cozy home-based spa. At first, the challenge was bringing awareness from potential clients, since my spa is not located at public area. At the outset, it was a frustrating experience to attract clients, and I found myself diving headfirst into learning about social media and content creation. However, as time went on, things took a positive turn as I prioritized delivering high-quality services that left clients satisfied.
The gratifying part was that they generously referred others, leading to a swift growth in my clientele.
While this is no longer a concern, the current obstacle lies in navigating the challenges of running a business during a recession.
People are tightening their budgets, particularly for personal care services, which poses a primary concern. Nevertheless, I firmly believe that enduring these difficult times is essential for accelerated learning and growth. With confidence, I can envision expanding my business once the economy recovers, capitalizing on the valuable lessons learned along the way.

What is a mistake that turned into a lesson?

When starting from scratch, there were definitely plenty of mistakes made - you live and learn, right?
One example is when I was designing my facial sessions, they weren't as effective as I had hoped. Sometimes, I would take so long with one session that the next client had to wait around for 20 minutes. It took a couple of months, but I eventually made some adjustments to my operations, and now everything runs much more smoothly and efficiently.

How much time do you spend working on your business each day/week? How do you prioritize work life balance if you are self employed?

One of the greatest perks of being a solo esthetician is the flexibility it offers in my schedule.
As a mom to a three-year-old, my life is pretty busy managing my business and taking care of my family. My business operates from 10 am to 7 pm, Monday to Saturday, but the best part is that I have the freedom to adjust my schedule and find a work-life balance that allows me to cherish
the precious moments of my beautiful life.

Meet TEI Alumni… Kateryna Shaposhnikova

Hi, I am Kateryna Shaposhnikova. I just opened my business YYC Laser & Skincare. Instagram: @yyc_laserandskincare.
I offer laser hair removal, IPL, Microneedling, Dermaplaning , customized facials and waxing.

Why did you choose to get into the esthetic industry? Was it a big change from your previous industry?

I chose to go into the esthetic industry because I love the beauty industry, I love people and I love to make a difference. It was a big change from my previous industry. I was an office manager before and those skills help me in my business now.

How long has your business been open or how long have you been employed?

I just started. Last July I opened my own business.

What was your biggest challenge; is it still an ongoing challenge?

The biggest challenge is the clientele. I will work with the best technologies in the market, which is not cheap. A lot of people are looking for cheap service, so we need to educate each client why he/she has to choose me.

What is a mistake that turned into a lesson?

Hard to tell. I am not ready to say it yet because I just started.

How much time do you spend working on your business each day/week? How do you prioritize work life balance if you are self employed?

Right now, before opening I work every single day and weekends as well. It is a lot but hopefully in the future, I will find balance.

What is one piece of advice you wish to share with someone who is interested in starting a career in esthetics or even a fellow beauty industry individual?

I would start with a good education. CIDESCO is the best program! It is challenging, but it will open many doors for you.

How did your training at TEI impact, influence or inspire you to succeed in business? Are you glad that you made the choice to do your training at TEI? Are there any special memories, moments or people of influence who made a difference in your education at TEI.

I love The Esthetic Institute for the opportunity to take CIDESCO. Angela was my teacher and I learned a lot from her. Tamara is my favorite teacher as well. I always feel their support!

Why did you choose to get into the esthetic industry? Was it a big change from your previous industry?

The decision to enter the esthetic industry is a personal and meaningful one for many individuals, driven by a variety of factors and motivations. As someone who has chosen to pursue a career in the esthetic industry, I can share my own reasons for making this decision.

First and foremost, I have always been fascinated by the art of beauty and the transformative power it holds. I firmly believe that feeling good about oneself and having confidence in one's appearance can greatly enhance one's overall well-being and quality of life. The esthetic industry provides me with a platform to help others achieve that sense of confidence and self-assurance.

Additionally, I have a genuine passion for skincare, cosmetics, and overall wellness. I enjoy staying updated with the latest trends, products, and techniques in the industry. This field allows me to merge my personal interests with my professional aspirations, creating a fulfilling and rewarding career path.

Moreover, I find great joy in connecting with people and making a positive impact on their lives. The esthetic industry is a unique space where I can build meaningful relationships with clients, understand their individual needs and concerns, and provide personalized solutions to enhance their natural beauty. Witnessing the smile on someone's face after a successful treatment or witnessing their increased self-esteem is incredibly gratifying.

Lastly, the esthetic industry offers a sense of personal fulfillment by contributing to the overall well-being of individuals. It's a field that allows me to promote self-care and encourage individuals to prioritize their physical and mental health. Knowing that I can play a part in someone's self-care journey and contribute to their happiness and self-esteem is incredibly rewarding.

How long has your business been open or how long have you been employed?

We opened June 1, 2022! We have been opened for a year now.

What was your biggest challenge; is it still an ongoing challenge?

Building a new start up business right after the Pandemic was a challenge in terms of building permits, supply chain, etc. Another challenge I experience is building brand awareness and getting my name out there. There are a lot of moving pieces when starting up but I take one step at time and I work hard to make my business and myself better a little every single day :)

What is a mistake that turned into a lesson?

Mistakes are an inevitable part of life especially in business, and while they can be disheartening and challenging, they also provide valuable opportunities for growth and learning. One particular mistake that stands out is when I underestimated the importance of effective communication within a team. We have dramatically improved since started this business and we get better everyday.

How much time do you spend working on your business each day/week? How do you prioritize work life balance if you are self employed?

I work at the clinic full time Tuesday - Saturday.
Balancing work life and owning a business can be a challenging endeavor, as it requires juggling multiple responsibilities and managing various aspects of your professional and personal life. However, with careful planning, effective time management, and a focus on well-being, it is possible to find harmony between the two. I am wife and mother of 3 kids. My Husband owns an IT company that he been running for 16+ years so I have learned a lot from him too. Getting his insight on navigating through running a business is very helpful and beneficial.

Here are some strategies to help achieve a healthy work-life balance while owning a business:

Set Clear Boundaries: Establish clear boundaries between work and personal life. Define specific working hours and dedicate time for personal activities, family, and self-care.

Prioritize and Delegate: Identify the most critical tasks that require your attention as a business owner and prioritize them. Delegate non-essential or time-consuming tasks to capable team members or consider outsourcing certain responsibilities. This allows you to focus on strategic decision-making and high-value activities.

Efficient Time Management: Implement effective time management techniques, such as creating a schedule, setting deadlines, and breaking tasks into manageable chunks.
Embrace Technology and Automation: Leverage technology and automation tools to streamline business operations and save time. We use Jane App, Mail Chimp, Hootsuite , and Canva to name a few.

Practice Self-Care: Prioritize self-care and well-being to maintain physical and mental health. Schedule regular exercise, relaxation, and quality time with loved ones. Engage in activities that rejuvenate and energize you. I get massages, mani, pedis, vitamin injections, work out, read and watching videos on laser/ facial treatments being done on social media and YouTube because I  love learning new techniques.

What is one piece of advice you wish to share with someone who is interested in starting a career in esthetics or even a fellow beauty industry individual?

Always do what you are most passionate about. With hard work, resilience and determination anything is possible. Stay focused and just be your genuine self and everything will fall into place

Meet TEI Alumni… Ashley MacNutt

Hello! I am Ashley, and I started Honey Aesthetics just this past June (2023). I am located in Medicine Hat, Alberta and my instagram is @Honeyaestheticsyxh. I offer laser hair removal,  Radio Frequency (RF), RF Microneedling, High Intensity Focused Ultrasound skin tightening (HIFU), IPL, Laser treatments with the Fotona (including tattoo removal) and the Clarion Bella MD device used for Hydrodermabrasion.

Why did you choose to get into the esthetic industry? Was it a big change from your previous industry?

I have been in the aesthetics industry since I was 19. After 15 years in the industry, I wanted to move into medical aesthetics. I have been an advanced medical aesthetician for the past 3 years.

How long has your business been open or how long have you been employed?

I just opened Honey Aesthetics this past June! I have, however, run a home-based esthetics business for 15 years.

What was your biggest challenge; is it still an ongoing challenge?

I think my biggest challenge is social media. When you're representing your business, your put on display and that has been a vulnerable possession to be in. Asking for help and hiring someone that specializes in that department has been a saving grace.

What is a mistake that turned into a lesson?

Managing expectations! That is something we as a whole need to be diligent in. Making sure our clients understand completely the process of our services. I have learned the hard way what happens when we are not clear enough.

How much time do you spend working on your business each day/week? How do you prioritize work life balance if you are self employed?

Well currently I am putting 40+ hours a week in. With 3 kids it's been hard to manage, especially with a baby, but with all the money I've invested I cannot afford to not put those kinds of hours in. I just try and take my quiet time when I can.

What is one piece of advice you wish to share with someone who is interested in starting a career in esthetics or even a fellow beauty industry individual?

The biggest piece of advice I can give is to have a relatable personality, great education and outstanding equipment. The esthetics industry is super saturated and half the battle is marketing yourself to stand out.

How did your training at TEI impact, influence or inspire you to succeed in business? Are you glad that you made the choice to do your training at TEI? Are there any special memories, moments or people of influence who made a difference in your education at TEI.

I could write a book on how much I loved my TEI experience. Right off the bat I knew it felt like home. Sitting catching up with Andreea, conferences with Silvia and Vanessa, building friendships with the other students! The biggest impact though is my relationship with Nadia and Tamara. First as teachers, but now I can turn to them anytime I need. I have taken every piece of advice they've given me and applied it to my business. I'm so grateful for the experience I've had. I feel like I've gotten the tools I've needed to run Honey Aesthetics!

Keep an eye out for our next TEI Alumni, it could be you!

Meet TEI Alumni… Coney Cruz Macapagal

I am Coney Cruz Macapagal, I own Gentle Touch which is a beauty and cosmetic parlor located in Carlyle, SK. Canada. Gentle touch offers eyebrow threading, eyelash extensions, and hydrating facial treatments, massages and many more.

Why did you choose to get into the esthetic industry? Was it a big change from your previous industry?

I chose this profession because it is something I was always passionate about and my fascination with skincare, the techniques, products and treatments that can enhance a person’s wellbeing, as well as my desire to have a positive impact on people’s lives by providing beauty treatment and relaxation through spa to help boost their confidence and I find joy in assisting others and making a difference in their well-being. But, most importantly is because being in the esthetic industry gives me an opportunity to be an entrepreneur and own business and have full control over my career, and because of the flexible work balance it provides, I could also focus on self-growth.

How long has your business been open or how long have you been employed?

I started my business last February 16 2022.

What was your biggest challenge; is it still an ongoing challenge?

My biggest challenge was starting my own business in a place where It was not just my business that was new, but also my life which was also just starting out in Carlyle as we were not originally from the area. At that time, building up my business required a lot of focus and energy since I needed to work really hard in order for people to know my business exists and build up a customer base and to stand out from competition, adding to the fact that adding to the fact that financial constraints added to the struggle of starting out a business. It required careful financial planning and resource allocation to manage the costs associated with establishing and promoting the business. I had to prioritize my spending, cut unnecessary expenses, and find creative ways to maximize my budget. By staying focused and resilient, I gradually built up my customer base and reputation, allowing my business to grow despite the initial financial challenges. While challenges may still arise from time to time in the ever-changing business landscape, the foundation I built, both professionally and personally, has provided me with a solid platform to navigate these hurdles. I continue to adapt and evolve my business strategies, staying attuned to industry trends and customer preferences, to ensure that my esthetics business remains relevant and successful in the long run.

What is a mistake that turned into a lesson?

As a beautician, one mistake that turned into a valuable lesson for me was not properly managing client expectations. Early on in my career, I had a client who came in with a specific vision. However, due to miscommunication and a lack of clarity on my part, the end result did not meet their expectations. This experience taught me the importance of effective communication and setting realistic expectations with clients. I realized that it is crucial to have a thorough consultation before providing any services, actively listening to the client's desires, and asking clarifying questions to ensure that I fully understand their expectations.

How much time do you spend working on your business each day/week? How do you prioritize work life balance if you are self employed?

I am still employed at a restaurant, even though I am self employed. I work on with my business when I get a chance to and when I am not working at the restaurant. I go to work almost every day, especially when there are clients scheduled to go to Gentle Touch that day, but also for walk-in customers, the benefit is thought, since I own my business, once I find my body getting fatigued, I can take breaks as long as I want and just close shop if I feel that I have already reached my goal for the day. As someone who is self-employed, I can always be with my family on special occasions, or school programs to support my kids because I hold my own time and can always choose to not open that day for my family, or if have plans already made that day.

What is one piece of advice you wish to share with someone who is interested in starting a career in esthetics or even a fellow beauty industry individual?

One piece of advice I can give to those wishing or is interested in starting a career in esthetics is to enjoy the process of learning, enjoy investing in your skills and interest in the beauty industry, and to develop a genuine passion for learning and investing in new techniques, because what you know now may not be applicable tomorrow, because the beauty industry is ever-evolving with new products and trends constantly developing. By having this thirst for knowledge and drive to continue honing what you know, you can stay ahead of competition and be able to offer exceptional service to your clients and remain competitive in the industry.

How did your training at TEI impact, influence or inspire you to succeed in business? Are you glad that you made the choice to do your training at TEI? Are there any special memories, moments or people of influence who made a difference in your education at TEI.

Training programs like TEI gave me a comprehensive education that covers new trends and various new aspects of esthetics such as skincare, makeup, spa treatments, and business management. By attending TEI, I was given a well-rounded training that helped me update the things I already know, and made me aware of the new trends developing in the industry. I would like to thank everyone I met while I was at TEI especially the educators who were passionate and knowledge about what they were teaching. I thank them for the guidance, mentorship and expertise they shared which inspired me further and gave me a much more solid foundation to continue my chosen career.
